Hassard Bonnington began defending medical malpractice claims in the early
part of the 20th century, when the firm was retained to defend the members
of a state association which covered almost all California physicians. As
California law evolved to address the delivery of health care in all of
its aspects, the firm was asked to participate in the formulation of
health policy, legislation, and the structure of health care delivery. The
firm has represented health service plans and health insurers ever since
it organized the nation’s first state-wide health care service plan more
than 50 years ago. Current integration of delivery and insuring mechanisms
affords health section attorneys the opportunity to combine experience
gained in representing both carriers and providers in litigation, business
transactions, and regulatory compliance.
Hassard Bonnington’s health law attorneys counsel professional groups,
carriers, hospital medical staffs, and others concerned with
credentialing, peer review, medical board and other regulatory
requirements, and federal and state regulations affecting the delivery of
health care. In disciplinary or credentialing proceedings, members of the
firm represent entities conducting these proceedings and individuals
facing accusations, and serve as hearing officers.
